Press Statement, 15 November 2019

OUTCRY AS ESKOM ROTEK INDUSTRIES EVICTS 14 EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES TODAY AT ROSHERVILLE IN JOHANNESBURG

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is disgusted and saddened by the attitude of Eskom Rotek Industries for evicting 14 employees and their families in Rosherville today without giving them alternative accommodation. This happens after the Eskom Rotek Industries was recently granted a court to evict the 14 employees and their families because their family flats were found inhabitable. An employee is injured due to the brutality of the red ants and police.

The 14 employees put an appeal against a court order granted to Eskom Rotek Industries on 30 October 2019, however, Eskom Rotek Industries continued to evict only 15 days later without notifying its employees of eviction date. The court order had agreements to be complied by parties first, however, Eskom Rotek Industries decided to implement soon as its back was covered, despite the order being violated by both parties.

The selfish and heartless employer has put the employee`s belongings on the street and valuables went missing. Children, the elderly, people living with disabilities are affected by the eviction. Eskom Rotek Industries did not care that these are family flats and some workers are dispatched on various sites. The worker's children are coming from school from writing exams to find their parents in disarray on the streets in the employer's area.

Eskom Rotek Industries has more black executives but this happens in their full-view. This is in contravention of the Eskom value of ubuntu.

As NUM, we will mobilize a national march against such behaviour of management. This must never be tolerated.

We call upon the Eskom CEO Jabu Mabuza to intervene in the Eskom Rotek industries.

NUM will continue to defend its members through this tough times and ensure there is justice with the arrogance of this nature.
