NUM and Cosatu to picket against fatalities at the Chamber of Mines on Thursday

Press Alert, 09 May 2018

NUM and Cosatu to picket against fatalities at the Chamber of Mines on Thursday.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) will be picketing at the Chamber of Mines on Thursday to demand drastic action against the deteriorating mine safety standards in the country.

Since the beginning of the year, the mining sector has seen more than 33 deaths. The NUM invites all workers to join this picket and make it clear to the Chamber of Mines that their insatiable greed creates widows and orphans.

There will also be a memorial service of the seven deceased mineworkers in Driefontein Masakhane shaft at Masizakhele indoor Arena from 10 am. The day is declared a non-working day for Driefontein operations.

Workers sell their labour, not their lives and the mineworkers they kill and maim carry this economy on their backs.

The details of the picket are as follows:

Venue: The Chamber of Mines Offices –Corner Sauer and Marshall Street Marshalltown - Johannesburg

Date: Thursday -10 May 2018

Time: 12:00 – 14h00
