SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT TO CONVENE A SUMMIT ON THE INTEGRATION OF THE COMPENSATION SYSTEMS

The South African Government, led by the Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi (MP), will on 19 and 20 May 2016 convene a Summit on the integration of compensation systems regarding occupational health and safety. The Minister will be joined by the Minister of Labour, Ms. Mildred Oliphant (MP) and the Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Mr. Godfrey Oliphant (MP).

The Summit aims to integrate the two pieces of legislation, the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act (ODMWA) and Compensation for Occupational Diseases and Injuries Act (COIDA) with the aim to develop a unified compensation system. It will be hosted under the theme “Access to equitable, fair and sustainable compensation system for all workers”.

Ministers from the Southern African Development Countries (SADC) region, including Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique; South African Mining Industry and organised labour will also participate at the summit.
