The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) take an exception to a plan by Lily Gold Mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga to issue Voluntary Severance Package (VSP) to workers outside the ambit of the law.
"As the NUM, we are opposed to that move. We believe that the management intends to retrench employees cheaply, therefore we are calling for the management to open section 189A in order for all affected parties to have their voices heard," says NUM North East Regional Deputy Chairperson Makhosonke Magudulela.
Workers at Lily Mine were instructed to stop working three months ago after three of their colleagues were trapped underground. Those workers still remained helplessly 80 meters under the earth's belly. The NUM reiterates its earlier position that the rescue mission should resume as soon as possible so that the three workers could be retrieved as matter of priority so that their families could find closure.
