17 000 MINEWORKERS MARCH AT RUSTENBURG PLATINUM MINE

Over 17000 mineworkers will this afternoon march from Bleskop stadium in Rustenburg to the offices of Rustenburg Platinum Mines.

The mine workers demand that Rustenburg Platinum Mine employ the services of an independent investigator to investigate and probe the disappearance of two mineworkers so that families can attain closure.

The two mineworkers Qikelela Nontanaza and Thomas Mashibwe who disappeared in 1991 and 2002 respectively remain unaccounted for. They last went underground at Frank Shaft and were never seen again.

“We want the mine to assist and ensure that the families of these comrades find closure. These people went underground, all records including CCTV footage show that they went underground but never returned” says Lizwi Kwezi, the NUM‘s Branch Secretary at Rustenburg Platinum Mines.

“We further demand the exhumation of Simon Mphanda who died at the mine and was buried by management at the scene. This worker deserves a decent burial” says Kwezi.

The march begins at 15H00.
