The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was formed on 4 December 1982. The first launching congress took place in Klerksdorp. At the time of the launch there were only four regions- Free State, Klerksdorp, Westonaria and Carltonville. At the time of the launch the Union recorded a membership of 14 000 and since then the NUM moved from strengh to strength and became a giant union that it is today.
The NUM is the largest recognised collective bargaining agent representing workers in the Mining, Construction and Electrical Energy Industries in South Africa and the largest affiliate of COSATU, with offices in all the South African Provinces. Internationally we are affiliated to the ICEM. |
