NUM PWV Region is ready to confront the IPPs and Thuma mina retrenchment train

Press statement, 16 November 2018

NUM PWV Region is ready to confront the IPPs and Thuma mina retrenchment train

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) PWV Region regard the march tomorrow against the IPPs as the beginning of a protracted war against the attack directed on working class and the poor by the South African government through IPPs and the closure of power stations and coal mines which will cause many workers to join the army of unemployed and throw millions of South African population into a sea of poverty.

"The PWV Region is ready to confront the implementation of these senseless and costly IPPs and the Thuma mina retrenchment train that is destroying massive jobs in all important sectors of the economy. We will fight this narrow capitalist agenda of an attempt of privatizing Eskom for selfish interests by individuals in government who want to sell the company to the highest bidder," said Ndlela Radebe, NUM PWV Regional Chairperson.

"It is high time that the ANC-led government understand that when we said #Siyavuma, we were not saying "Siyavuma" to job losses through senseless retrenchments, we were not saying "Siyavuma" to privatisation, we never meant to say, "Siyavuma" to deepening crisis of poverty by our own government. Tomorrow we will be in Union Building to warn the government not to provoke workers beyond the limit." Ndlela added.
