NUM to embark on a strike at Nkomati Nickel Mine
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has  obtained a certificate of non-resolution from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) over a wage dispute with Nkomati Nickel Mine, owned by billionaire Patrice Motsepe‘s of the  African Rainbow Minerals (ARM). It is a joint venture between ARM and Norilsk.

The strike will commence on Sunday 16 August 2015 starting with the night shift at or about 7 pm. It will include every shift that follows thereafter, and will continue indefinitely until the NUM demands are complied with," said William Makgabo Mabapa, NUM Deputy General Secretary and the Chief Negotiator at Nkomati Mine.

"The NUM and the Nkomati Mine are differing  on two critical issues. The first issue is the car allowance which is available to the management and the few employees. The NUM position is that all employees must belong to Group Scheme Car Insurance for Nkomati Mine."

"The second issue is the long service awards. The NUM wants the long service award to start at 5 years where the company must pay R3 000 and for 10 years it must pay R 6000. The company wants to start paying the long service award at 10 years for only R3 000," said William Makgabo Mabapa, NUM Deputy General Secretary and the Chief Negotiator at Nkomati Mine.

Nkomati mine is situated in Machado in Mpumalanga next to Nelspruit.
